Redesign or Update

7 tips to choose if redesigning or updating your website is needed.

A website is the most powerful way for a company to spread its image and inspire confidence in its audience. To find out if yours is playing this ambassadorial role effectively, we suggest that you answer the questions in this short quiz.

  • The design of your website has not changed in 3 years?
  • It is not optimized for navigation via mobile media?
  • Your customers complain about a bad user experience?
  • Its content is obsolete and does not reflect the reality of your activity?
  • Your competitors are ahead of you in search engines?
  • The loading time of your pages is too long?
  • By visiting it you can wonder if your company still exists?
  • Your traffic is in free fall?

If you have answered yes to 2 or more questions, this article concerns you directly. We will try to give you the keys to identify the nature of the problems it faces and help you choose between an update and a global redesign of your site.

Summary:

  1. Your site is too slow.
  2. It is not suitable for navigation from mobile media.
  3. It receives little or no organic traffic.
  4. It is technically and visually outdated
  5. It does not correctly represent your offer
  6. It offers a “confusing” user experience.
  7. It does not convert.
  8. To conclude.

1 – Your site is too slow.

Google has made the loading speed on all devices one of the determining criteria for ranking its results.

Test your site with PageSpeed Insights and submit its different pages to it:

  • If at the end of the tests you find that only a handful of pages are not working properly, or that the problem is mainly due to the weight of your images, it should be possible to correct this without compromising the entire site.
  • If, on the other hand, most of your site suffers from too slow a loading time, and PageSpeed Insights tells you that it has many JavaScript runtime errors or that your site uses too many CSS resources, the problem is certainly structural and simple updates will not bring any significant benefits, it would be more appropriate to address the problem in depth by completely rethinking your site.

2 – It is not suitable for navigation from mobile media.

More than 60% of traffic comes from mobile devices (phones and tablets). Google favours in its results the sites most compatible with these media, it even integrates for some searches (shopping, entertainment and hospitality for example) the sites most suitable for mobile browsing from companies located close to the person making a request.

If your site is not responsive design (i.e. it does not have a layout and design specially adapted for mobile navigation) you will be penalized by search engines who will consider that it offers a bad user experience. The adaptation of your site to the responsive design format will often require a global redesign of your site.

3 – It receives little or no organic traffic.

Traffic acquisition is at the heart of your digital strategy, without traffic, no possibility to convert your visitors into subscribers, contacts or customers.

A constant decrease in organic search traffic (that from search engines) is directly related to the decrease in your level of natural referencing. This decrease may be caused by many factors, some technical, others related to the design of your site and others related to the nature of the content published on it.

There is no single cause or answer to this problem, the ideal is to consult a professional who will make a detailed diagnosis and propose appropriate punctual or structural solutions.

4 – It is technically and visually outdated.

An outdated or outmoded site is often recognizable at first glance, it reflects an unflattering image of your company and your skills and it often has other disadvantages such as:

  • A low level of security (which also hinders SEO);
  • A lack of fresh and attractive content;
  • A high probability that it is incompatible with mobile devices;
  • Reduced accessibility and ease of use;
  • A message that is out of step with your offer and your values.

If your site is obsolete, opt for a global redesign with a scalable solution such as Growth Driven Design. This approach based on the analysis of metrics (origin of visits, most visited pages, conversion rates…) allows you to create sites designed to respond quickly to your evolution and that of your customers’ needs.

5 – It does not correctly represent your offer.

Since your website was built your service offer has probably evolved, new products have been added, your internal organization may no longer be the same…, the website design was done by a person or agency with whom you no longer work and you do not know how to update your website.

Remember that your website is the tool your sales team uses every day to explain who you are and what you do to potential customers. It may even be the only place where people can learn about you or buy your products.

If it does not reflect your current capabilities you urgently need to contact a professional agency that can provide you with a complete service offer. The advantage of these agencies is that they bring together in one place all the web skills: development, programming, strategic thinking, web design, digital marketing, referencing, maintenance and hosting. Working with an agency allows you to have a proactive partner who will have a global vision of your project and who will make it evolve according to your needs while saving you time and improving your digital efficiency.

6 – It offers a “confusing” user experience.

The user experience, or UX design, is essential to ensure fast and intuitive navigation on your website and to provide easy access to what your visitors need.

UX design is a reflection that takes place before the creation of a website and which makes it possible to define the navigation and architecture of your site as well as the way in which the content is distributed during its consultation.

Sites whose user experience has been neglected are often the oldest and those whose browsing on mobile media is not compatible… only one solution is needed: a global overhaul.

7 – It does not convert.

If the initial objective of your website is to communicate your offer, your values and to affirm your credibility, its final objective is to generate leads or contacts.

By syllogism, a site that addresses a well-defined target group with the right codes and whose content is sufficiently attractive will achieve its objective. But what’s the point of generating traffic if you don’t have the tools to retain your visitors, know their motivations and make them aware of your offer?

Digital marketing via inbound marketing has developed tools to facilitate the transition from visitor to lead and then from lead to customer. Call to Action is one such tool. Their efficiency allows you to channel navigation within your site to a funnel that leads the most qualified visitors to interact with your services.

Call to Action and Inbound Marketing are compatible with recent, responsive design sites where UX has been optimized. As a Hubspot partner (world leader in inbound) for the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, we will be pleased to give you more information on the advantages of this new approach to digital marketing and to explain how to integrate it into your next website.

To conclude.

Except in situations where it is easy to decide, creating or redesigning a site is a problem that is studied on a case-by-case basis as the number of factors involved is specific to each site. We hope that the examples we have just presented can help you to better understand your situation and identify your needs.

But remember that a site is only one step towards an effective presence on the Internet, the transmission of your identity and values, the targeting of your audience and the use of digital marketing tools are other equally important and necessary to ensure the success of your digital communication.

So, if you do not master all these skills and if you do not have enough time, we would advise you to contact a professional web agency that can provide you with a global and effective answer.
